Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are needed for scheduled monthly visits,
educational programs and fund-raising events. Individuals without pets are
welcomed, however, especially needed are "teams" comprised of a pet and its
owner/handler. These volunteer "teams" learn the skills necessary to conduct
meaningful, productive pet therapy visits and animal assisted activities at
monthly meetings and by observing other experienced volunteer "teams". New
volunteer "teams" go with experienced ones until they become comfortable.
Volunteers are asked to go on at least one visit per month, attend monthly
meetings, assist with fundraising efforts and comply with the standards set
forth in the Constitution and by-laws of HAB. Monthly schedules include
visit opportunities on most weekdays, some evenings and Saturdays. |

Authorized Animals
Dogs, cats and domesticated rabbits are currently authorized to
participate. Acceptance of other types of animals is at the discretion of
the veterinary advisor. Pets must be examined and certified as "healthy" and
"temperament appropriate" by the Human Animal Bond Veterinary Chief every 6
months. All animals should display appropriate behavior, be clean and well
groomed, up to date on required vaccinations, be free of fleas, ticks and
other parasites and illnesses, have an annual negative heartworm test, and
be taking heartworm preventative medication recommended for the area. |

About Pet Therapy
-
The benefits of interaction with pets are
many. Visits with therapy pets encourage reminiscence and social
interaction and result in stress relief and incidental physio-therapy.
-
Medical studies suggest that blood pressure
may be lowered and hospital stays shortened when patients have access to
pets.
-
Often, a visit with a pet can be the high
point in the day of a shut in, bringing happiness and a sense of calm and
well-being.
